Description
Our house is situated between neighbouring houses on the eastern edge of the village of Soglio, on the southern slope of the Bergell valley, canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. The location on the mountainside offers an unobstructed view over the mountain landscape and the roofs of the village. Built 300 years ago from solid natural stone, the house was restored in the 1960s and care was taken to harmonise the historic with the functional. Wood was predominantly used for the interior work, but also the typical Bergell granite, as has been customary in this region for generations. Bregaglia, one of the southernmost valleys in Graubünden, stretches from the village of Maloja, 1815 metres above sea level, to the Italian town of Chiavenna, 330 metres above sea level. The valley is characterised by the Maira, which flows from the Maloja Pass into Lake Como. The 26 km long valley on the Swiss side ends in the border town of Castasegna, 696 metres above sea level. The climate in the lower part of the valley is mild, almost Mediterranean. A few palm trees grow in the gardens of Castasegna.
