Monastery
Einsiedeln is famous for its baroque monastery complex. The Benedictine abbey is the largest place of pilgrimage in Switzerland and has always been an important stop on the Way of St James. The Black Madonna of Einsiedeln attracts around 800,000 pilgrims and tourists every year. Particularly worth seeing are the monastery library and the baroque stables, which are home to the oldest surviving stud farm in Europe.
Place
The "village" of Einsiedeln is characterised by a lively cultural life (carnival, world theatre, museums, events). The density of restaurants, pubs and bars has always been above average and you can still buy (almost) everything you really need in the village.
Nature
The Schwantenau moorland is the fourth largest raised bog in Switzerland. The picture-book landscape is a small jewel of national importance.
